Cartlett is a very old established settlement and although the date of its creation is not known the area is mentioned in 1298 (as Cathlet) - the name is assumed to be a Anglicisation of the Welsh word 'cyllell' which means knife; this is quite interesting as the name of the Cleddau into which Cartlett brooks flows is derived from the Welsh 'cleddyf' which means sword so in Haverfordwest we have the sword and the knife.
This part of Haverfordwest has been subjected to innumerable changes during the last century and would be almost unrecognisable to those who lived in the area even 50 years ago.
On the main route into Haverfordwest by road Cartlett was well-endowed with public house, inns and hotels and while many of the names of older establishments such as the Narberth Arms, Tylers Arms and Square & Compass will be unknown to most of us others such as the Queens Hotel, Masons Arms and Carmarthen Arms will be remembered. Today only the Mill-Ford Arms remains - it was until recently known as the Milford Arms in honour of Lord Milford.
